CHURN - Heated Couplings In The Sun (Earmark, EP)

Ten years after the demise of The Proletariat, three quarters of that band is back, with a new drummer, as Churn. Slow-buildups, usually starting with a warm, textured guitar signature, less jagged than the Proles' assault, but Rick Brown's vocals still convey rage and emotion. The music also packs hooks and power, adding modern and melodic elements. Rick's cowbell on "Heavy Wire Brush" brings back memories of "Hollow Victory" from "Soma Holiday" while "Susan Said" combines shimmering hooks and tight, rhythmic punch. A slightly-different approach, but effective.
